Product Description

"Although this is a small book on the spirituality of a medieval woman from a glorious past, it is also a book about Christian life today. Clare's decisive emphasis on the person of Jesus Christ is an emphasis on the human person as well, what we are and what we are called to be." —From the Introduction Clare of Assisi: A Heart Full of Love explores Clare's deep desire to live the gospel life, more precisely, her desire for all of us to reflect on Christ and his crucifixion in order to see our own strengths and weaknesses, and most importantly, our capacity to love. Ilia Delio illustrates how Clare, through her life, her writings, letters, prayer and example, is truly a mystic who helped generations of Catholics clearly see how Christ took on human flesh, not just to suffer and die for us, but to help us all in turn reflect back the face of Christ to the world. extraordinary examination of a spiritual life 5 by .. Ms Angel (Yorktown Hts., NY USA)
This tiny book is filled with words of wisdom about the first Franciscan woman, Clare of Assisi. In particular, it examines Clare's dedication to poverty as a way to live with and through Christ, and to achieve union with Him. Clare lived knowing that attachments to material possessions can stand in the way of Love and of the gospel life. Ilia Delio's book is filled with scholarship and intelligence, yet it gets to the heart the true meaning of this great saint's life: Clare is a model of a life lived only for Love of God. There are many sources for biographical sketches of Clare, but this book is deep and meaty in its examination of her spiritual legacy. It is a must-read for those desiring to understand Clare's understanding of the Franciscan way.

A seeker's guide to the mysticism of Clare and Jesus 5 by .. Hannahzarah Avarraschild (Burlington, VT United States)
I find this book to be an excellent source book for people like myself who are seeking The Divine. The author presents a clear and understandable path that was found and expounded by Clare of Assisi.

I would recommend it to anyone who wants to seek The Divine through the death of Jesus the Christ. I am pagan and still am receiving a lot from this book. It will take time and thought to absorb all that is presented in it.

Transforming the World 4 by .. Carol Blank (USA)
Ilia Delio opens with brief background information including Clare's connection with Francis of Assisi, and her "evangelical spirituality" focused on imitating Christ and making Him available to others. She also introduces us to four short letters Clare wrote to Agnes of Prague, which Delio believes contain the essence of Clare's ideas on spiritual life. The "pillars of Clare's thought," expressed in her second letter to Agnes, embrace four basic themes: gaze, consider, contemplate, and imitate. These four topics, along with close examination of the letters, provide the framework for the book. Although Delio refers to this as a "small book," and one reviewer quoted on the jacket calls it "a simple portrait," it is a text for careful examination rather than a quick read. Reflection questions in each chapter, extensive notes, and an index are added to help the reader along.

In discussing complex material, as Clare's ideas on the "poverty" of God and the "mirror of the cross," Delio draws on writings from Saints Francis and Bonaventure and others whose spiritual path was similar to Clare's. She also looks at Clare's practices and beliefs in light of today's world: "(Clare's) spirituality helps us understand that God will not transform the world for us but then again God will not transform the world without us."

Disappointed 1 by .. Teresa Wagner (Big Sur, CA)
I was disappointed. I was looking more for a bio of St. Clare to learn more about the background, history and activities of her life. . . instead it is a domatic religious book, filled with assumptions of Clare's thoughts and feelings. Probably a very inspriational book for those who are devoted to a life of devotion to Christ, but not very helpful in terms of learning about Clare's life as a person.
